Misheel Expo Center
Mongolia’s large-scale mining and infrastructure projects have begun, and the country’s economic growth is projected to a staggering 15%. Much like Chile, the mining sector is Mongolia’s single largest industry accounting for 65% of export earnings. Mongolia is largely unexplored and is richly endowed with the widest range of economic mineral resources in the world today. Currently coal dominates the picture however gold, silver, base metals, and iron are in the development stage. There are many mines in operation, more than 1,000 active mining licences and 30 mining companies operating.
Rio Tinto through their subsidiary Turquoise Hill has invested $6 billion in Oyu Tolgoi. It is the world’s largest undeveloped open pit and underground copper-gold project, and scheduled to open in 2013. Of note, more than 90% of the products and services required for developing mining properties are imported into Mongolia.
